Some examples of his accomplishments are:
- For five consecutive years, Shaun performed
at the Calgary International Children’s Festival
- Recorded two children’s cassettes titled
Surprises, which featured 14 of his original songs, and
Just Plain Old Me, once again featuring 12 more original
songs. Just Plain Old Me was nominated for the Alberta
Recording Industries Award "Children’s Album of the Year"
- Became a sponsored "Fun With Music"
performer for the Calgary radio station 66CFR, where
Shaun performed for various local events such as: the 1988
Winter Olympic Games, the CalgaryWinter Festival,
Zoonival (at the Calgary Zoo), the Glenbow Museum,
at numerous community functions, and at local schools
Shaun continues to be active in the children’s
music scene.
1996:
Shaun entered the realm of folk music with the band Half the Sky,
where he and five other musicians recorded their first self-titled
album which featured 12 of his original songs. One of Shaun’s
songs, Katie was the winner of the, Lite 96 CHFM "Brite
Lites" Southern Alberta Songwriting Competition. Half the
Sky was placed on the CKUA Radio Network's Top 15 Celtic
& Traditional Influenced CD’s of 1996 and nominated for Folk/Roots
CD of the Year (1996) at the ARIA Awards (Alberta Recording Artists
Association).
1998:
Shaun and fellow band members recorded the second Half the Sky
CD titled, Naked as Moonlight, which once again featured
9 of Shaun’s original songs. By this time, Half the Sky had established
itself internationally. According to http://www.folkradio.org/,
by October 2000, for 100 weeks Half the Sky had been averaging
112 spins per week, on non-Canadian radio stations in the US.
2004:
Shaun is pleased to release his solo album, “Coburn Street”.
Like the title, his songs share universal themes that have graced
many of our paths in life. The simplicity, diversity, warmth,
and richness of these melodies will captivate a variety of listeners.
So what do others say about the “sound?” With reference to “Half
the Sky”, Jean Mills, of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, wrote the following:
“ …there is nothing traditional about the songs, unless you include
the fiddle, mandolin and whistle licks. They vary from contemporary
folk ballads to jazzy instrumentals to the occasional pop-sounding
anthem….” [Canadian Folk Music Bulletin, March/June 2000 (vol.34.1/2)]
